Sr. Structural Engineer & Design Manager

KML is seeking to recruit a skilled and highly motivated Senior Engineer within our Structural Design group.  Candidates are creative problem solvers with the ability to independently plan and carry out projects that require the application of advanced technical knowledge, engineering experience and project management skills. Your natural leadership skills allow you to guide the work of other technical staff with the result of meeting or surpassing project and client expectations. The specific responsibilities of the Senior Engineer & Design Manager include, but are not limited to the following outlined areas:

  • Plan, organize, direct, control and evaluate the activities and operations of the Structural Engineering & Design Department
  • Develop and implement policies, standards and procedures for the engineering and technical work performed in the department
  • Consult and negotiate with clients to prepare specifications, explain proposals and present engineering reports and findings
  • Assign, co-ordinate and review the technical work of the department
    Recruit personnel and oversee development and maintenance of staff competence in required areas
  • Participate directly in the design, development and inspection of technical projects or in the engineering work of the department.
  • Responsible for the design of structural systems, from scheme design through to working drawings
  • Prepares and coordinates structural specifications
  • Produces correspondence, reports, and fee letters independently
  • Coordinates structural documents with those of other disciplines as required
  • Manages the design process and provides deliverables within own control consistently on time and within budget
  • Reviews structural works onsite to monitor compliance with contract documents
  • Undertakes contract administration services on projects as required
  • Reviews budget/profitability of projects with Project Managers and VP’s
  • Communicates directly and regularly with clients and manages client meetings as required.
  • Enables the creation of potential new work

Skill/Experience Requirements:

  • A bachelor's degree in civil/structural engineering
  • Experience in structural engineering, 7 years minimum, including supervisory experience, minimum 3 years
  • Sealing structural drawings on a regular basis for at least 5 years
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (P. Eng.) in Ontario, for a minimum of at least 5 years
  • Excellent understanding of engineering procedures and standards, complemented by a strong understanding of organizational objectives and standards
  • Effective application of training principles
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to motivate technical staff
  • Effective communication skills including verbal, written and presentation skills
  • A proven ability to work effectively both independently and in a team-oriented environment
